Patient sues spine surgeon, Northwestern Memorial alleging negligence: 5 things to know

A female patient is suing her spine surgeon and hospital over alleged negligence during a 2012 surgery, according to a Cook County Record report.

Here are five key notes:

 

1. The patient is suing Wellington Hsu, MD, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation and Hsu Group for alleged negligence. The complaint was filed in the Cook County Circuit Court, Law Division in August.

 

2. The complaint alleges the patient sustained neurological injury during a spinal surgery Dr. Hsu performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The complaint alleges proper precautions weren’t taken to protect the patient’s nerves and the injury wasn’t recognized in a timely manner.

 

3. The complaint also alleges improperly placed retractors and failure to diagnose the patient’s condition.

 

4. The patient is seeking a judgment exceeding $50,000 from each defendant.

 

5. John J. MacInerney of Hofeld and Schaffner in Chicago is representing the patient.
