Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Chris Shaffrey of University of Virginia School of Medicine

Chris Shaffrey, MD, is board certified in neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Shaffrey specializes in spinal abnormalities, scoliosis, craniocervical abnormalities, spinal tumors, spinal vascular malformations and degenerative spinal disorders. He performs 250 surgeries annually.

 

The Morbidity and Mortality Committee Chair for the Scoliosis Research Society, Dr. Shaffrey is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Neurological Surgery.

 

Dr. Shaffrey is on the editorial boards of Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery and Journal of Spinal Disorders.

 

After receiving his medical degree from University of Virginia in Charlottesville, he did a general surgical internship at Naval Hospital San Diego. Dr. Shaffrey then completed neurosurgical and orthopedic residencies at the University of Virginia. He also did a spine fellowship and pediatric and adult reconstructive spine surgery at the same university. Dr. Shaffrey also worked for the United States Navy at Portsmouth (Va.) Navy Medical Center.
