Here are five quick facts about SRS:
1. Thirty-five members founded the Scoliosis Research Society in 1966 and now the organization has grown to 1,200 members worldwide.
2. SRS is a nonprofit organization with both physicians and allied health personnel as members, focused on providing care to spinal deformity patients.
3. Last year, the organization awarded 16 scholarships and 11 fellowships to young surgeons in 13 different countries. There were three surgeons selected as traveling fellows to visit centers in the United States as well.
4. About 30 percent of the membership is from outside of the United States. Kenneth M.C. Cheung, MD, of Hong Kong was elected vice president last year, making him the first non-North American to enter the presidential line.
5. Since 1998, the organization has awarded more than 100 grants totaling more than $3.5 million.
