Here are four notes:
1. Dr. Sontich previously worked at MetroHealth Medical Center — Cleveland’s only other top-level trauma center. He is well-known for his work on lower extremity fracture care, knee and hip joint replacement and limb salvage as an alternative to amputation.
2. Dr. Sontich also serves as president of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society. He was president of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons from 2009 to 2010.
3. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine and completed his orthopedic trauma fellowship at MetroHealth and Case Western Reserve University, both located in Cleveland.
4. UH announced it was pursing a Level 1 trauma designation in May and expects to receive permission from the state to operate as a provisional Level 1 trauma center by September or October. UH predicts that the hospital will receive full verification from the American College of Surgeons sometime next year.
