Here are four things to know:
1. Isador Lieberman, MD, spine surgeon with the Texas Back Institute in Plano, organized the mission.
2. Founded in 2006 by Mark Kajanja, MD, and Dr. Lieberman, the Uganda Spine Mission is designed to provide spine care to Ugandan patients with infectious, degenerative, traumatic and congenital spinal complications.
3. This year’s mission helped 60 patients, with surgeries performed by Dr. Lieberman, Paul Homan, MD, of Methodist Hospital Houston, and Shane Burch, MD, of UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco.
4. The spine surgeons used the BoneScalpel, saying that it reduced blood loss and provided large amounts of bone graft to use elsewhere.
“Again this year, Misonix has been generous to the Uganda Spine Surgery Mission, and with their help, many less fortunate individuals will be able to return to an active and healthy spine life,” said Dr. Lieberman.
