Here are five things to consider:

1. Men are more likely to suffer soft-tissue injuries, such as in the Achilles tendon or quadriceps. These injuries usually occur from lifting extremely heavy weights.

2. Achilles tendon injuries are also more a man’s injury, happening three times more in males than females, often from contact sports.

3. Women are more likely to suffer ACL tears, are less likely to return to the sport and are more prone to injuring their other ACL in recovery, according to the study.

4. Multidirectional shoulder instability affects more women than men, possibly due to greater joint laxity.

5. Gender affects hormones, anatomy, joint stability and bone quality, and thus is a crucial factor to consider when physicians treat patients.
