Here are five things to know:

1. Dr. Carlson completed the operation on June 30 at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Va.

2. The 100th procedure was an L5-S1 posterior lumbar interbody fusion for a 69-year-old patient. The patient had constant pain before surgery and failed conservative treatment.

3. The Less Exposure Surgery is a midline approach implanting the PedFuse REmind screws designed for less tissue disruption and smaller incisions.

4. The procedure can be completed in the outpatient setting, which is less expensive than the hospital and eliminates long hospital stays for recovery.

5. The procedure is designed for less pain, less blood loss and quicker recovery than with traditional open surgeries.

Dr. Carlson is the managing partner of Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Newport News and served as chief of surgery at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital.
