Physicians at Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute in Baltimore have devised the STAR tumor ablation system, a device reducing pain from spinal tumors and enhancing patients’ quality of life, according to News-Medical.Net.

1. STAR uses radio waves and microwave energy to heat and destroy tumors.

 

2. Physicians then will deposit a liquefied cement to stabilize the bone.

 

3.  Physicians utilize X-ray technology to place a probe through a small incision in the spinal tumor.

 

4. Microwave energy, harnessed through a steerable radio wave antenna, heats to tumor to 120 degrees, destroying the cells.

 

5. This procedure destroys the tumor, which could lead to the spine becoming unstable. Surgeons add the liquid cement to support the bone and fill the tumor bone.
