Study: Begin Decompressive Spine Surgery Within 24 Hours of Injury

Spine surgeons should begin to decompress an acutely injured spinal cord within 24 hours of the injury to create the best outcome, according to a study published in Spine.

In order to find the optimum time to perform decompressive surgery for acute SCI, researchers performed a systematic review of the preclinical and clinical data published on the subject, which included a survey with 971 spine surgeons. In the survey, nearly every surgeon said they would prefer to perform surgery within 24 hours of the injury.

Surgeons prefer to perform the surgery within 12 hours if the patient has incomplete cervical SCI.
