Make negotiations friendly: 6 key strategies

Here are six ways to get what you want from a negotiation and also keep good relationships, according to Business Day’s adaption of How to Negotiate Nicely Without Being a Pushover at Harvard Business Review.

  1. Make small talk to learn the other’s interests. This will build trust.

2.  Do not concede on price to try and buy the acceptance of the other part. Instead, push back respectfully.

3.  Approach the negotiation as an act of “joint problem solving” to stay creative and un-antagonistic.

4.  Use terms like “we” instead of “I.”

5.  Ask careful questions and listen to the answers to better understand the other side.

6.  Understand the issues from the other party’s point of view.
