4 NFL draftees with serious medical issues

David J. Chao, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with two decades of NFL team physician experience, evaluated reports of key NFL draftees, and in an article for National Football Post, he issued a medical “red light” to the four players who “indicated a serious medical issue that should cause a team to stop and reassess.”

Here are four notes on the four “red light” draftees:

  • Shane Ray of Missouri suffered a toe injury and although reports said he would need foot surgery, a private physician disagreed.
  • Jay Ajayi of Boise State suffered knee articular cartilage issues and has been playing on it since 2011, but Dr. Chao notes the cartilage may be wearing out.
  • Ifo Ekpre-Olomu of Oregon tore his ACL and had surgery in December. Dr. Chao said his hurdles include the initial injury needing to have spared the cartilage and his position as a cornerback requires changing directions, which is the last step in ACL rehab.
  • Jalen Strong of Arizona State will likely need surgery after suffering a small bone fracture of the wrist. Mr. Strong states no surgery is needed and passed a physical from Steelers’ physicians, requiring no additional medical check.
