After an elbow injury ended his dreams of playing college football, Dr. Slawski was encouraged by his orthopedic surgeon to pursue medicine. Today, he is an orthopedic surgeon caring for athletes. He started the program Trails West for athletic trainers to treat injuries during the sports season.
Under his direction, the program evolved into New West Sports Medicine and now serves 50 area schools.
Dr. Slawski also served in the U.S. Air Force and with his family is turning a farm near Kirksville, Mo., into a physical and spiritual retreat for combat veterans and their families.
