AAOS supports the Falls Prevention Awareness Day, led by Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn and the Foundation for Education and Musculoskeletal Research. Matthew Jimenez, MD, orthopedic surgeon and CEO of FEMR, said half of all falls in the home can be prevented.

Falls cause nearly 600,000 deaths every year among people older than 65, according to the release. Among other tips, AAOS recommends homes with at-risk adults should remove rungs and electrical cords, use non-slip mats and install grab bars in the bathroom.
