Dr. Stuessi established two sports medicine and rehabilitation clinics at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego prior to establishing the clinics overseas. Treating the marines at these clinics was faster than sending them to hospitals, according to the report.

Dr. Stuessi and the other physicians in Afghanistan focus on treating mild trauma and concussions caused by improvised explosive devices. He earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and completed a sports medicine fellowship at Camp Pendleton.
