The award went to Harpal S. Khanuja, MD, a Baltimore-based surgeon. Here are five quick facts about Dr. Khanuja:
1. He has a special interest in hip and knee disorders and is chief of hip and knee replacement surgery with the orthopedic surgery department at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He is also the chief of orthopedic surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
2. Throughout his career, Dr. Khanuja has traveled to foreign countries for teaching and philanthropy.
3. He is co-founder of Operation Walk Maryland, which is a non-profit organization to bring hip and knee replacements to impoverished individuals around the world as well as educating local healthcare providers.
4. He previously earned the Knee Society Insall traveling fellowship.
5. Dr. Khanuja earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College in New York, where he also completed his orthopedic surgery residency. His additional training included a fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
