Gunnar Andersson, MD (Rush University Medical Center, Chicago). Dr. Andersson is the chairman emeritus of the department of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He was chairman of the orthopedic surgery department for 14 years — until 2008. His area of clinical expertise includes spine and back procedures and he has a research interest into disc degeneration, epidemiology and occupational biomechanics. He recently completed a National Institutes of Health-funded project on disc degeneration.
Dr. Andersson is past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians. He is currently president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery. Dr. Andersson also served as council member of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health and chairman of the research committee for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Andersson earned his medical degree at Sahlgren Hospital, University of Gotenborg in Sweden, where he also completed his residency. He finished a fellowship at The London Hospital in the United Kingdom, focused on orthopedics.
