Physicians & AMA Take On Narrow Networks

According to an American Medical Association report, physicians are now taking action to fight back against narrowing networks and payer attempts to squeeze them on access to care.

Last year UnitedHealthcare terminated thousands of physicians from Medicare Advantage plans without a cause, and this past March AMA sent comments to CMS on the requirements of Medicare Advantage carriers for 2015. Physicians have also been advocating for courts to intervene, as the terminations cause disruption to longstanding patient-physician relationships, referral networks and emergency department care, according to the report.

CMS has also reported it will take more active approaches to require network adequacy for plans on the Affordable Care Act exchanges and issued a final letter to federally-facilitated exchanges to use “reasonable access” standards for evaluating 2015 plans.
