In a 2007 interview with New York Daily News, Dr. Martin predicted orthopedic surgery will see a huge increase in joint problems in the next few decades. He already sees more boomer-age patients at his practice, and he believes the numbers will increase dramatically going forward.
“We’re probably 20 years down the line from the exercise-sports activity explosion,” he said. “Worn-out joints will be a huge problem.” He added that the problem will be exacerbated by the number of patients who are overweight, since extra pounds on an aging frame can cause further joint damage.
A recognized sports medicine specialist, Dr. Martin has served as team physician for Wake Forest Athletics since 1990. He was elected to his current role as director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2005.
Dr. Martin earned his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He also completed his internship in general surgery and residencies in orthopedic surgery and general surgery at Johns Hopkins before moving to George Sports Medicine to complete a fellowship in 1987.
