Here are the estimated numbers of nurse practitioners and physician assistants practicing primary care in the country in 2010, according to research commissioned by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality:

•    Of a total of 106,073 NPs in the U.S. in 2010, 52 percent or 55,625 were practicing primary care.
•    Of a total of 106,073 PAs in the U.S. in 2010, 43.4 percent or 30,402 were practicing primary care.
