Orthopedic & Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Evan Flatow of Mount Sinai

An internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon, Evan Flatow, MD, has spent his 12 years with Mount Sinai Hospital developing an acclaimed shoulder service that specializes in minimally invasive fracture repair, arthroscopic repair, arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery and shoulder replacement. He has led the field in the use of regional blocks, which allow surgeons to perform shoulder operations without general anesthesia. Dr. Flatow was also instrumental in developing a comprehensive shoulder replacement system that is used internationally by shoulder surgeons.

In an interview with Orthopaedics Today, Dr. Flatow called the development of reverse TSR the most dramatic change since he started practice 20 years ago. Reverse TSR, which is performed if total shoulder replacement is unsuccessful, reverses the structure of the healthy shoulder joint and provides significant improvement in range of motion for patients with severe rotator cuff arthropathy.

As a leader in his field, Dr. Flatow speaks regularly on shoulder surgery, trains some of the nations’ leading shoulder surgeons, and serves on the faculty of many national shoulder courses. He is both editor and reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

In a 2009 interview with Becker’s Hospital Review, Dr. Flatow recommended leaders of orthopedic departments stay present and active to promote enthusiasm and success. “Never forget why you became a doctor in the first place,” he said. “In the end, all of the other things work out if you focus on that. If you get too caught up in the business and politics of running a department, you lose that core which tells you to always do the best for our patients.”

Dr. Flatow earned his MD from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a surgical residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York and an orthopedic residency and fellowship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He was chosen by Castle Connolly as one of America’s top doctors and has won the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons’ Neer Award, its highest honor, four times.
