In addition to his surgical experience, Dr. Caruso is a dedicated advocate for physician rights. As the cofounder of the “Save Our Doctors, Protect Our Patients” campaign, Dr. Caruso initiated and helped create legislation to reimburse physicians for trauma care delivery in Maryland. A strong believer in physician involvement in the economics of health delivery, Dr. Caruso has helped to sustain the extensive Maryland trauma care system with his legislative efforts.
Dr. Caruso received his MD from the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va., and completed his three-year residency at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk. After completing a two-year residency at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, he started work with his current practice, Neurosurgical Specialists.
In a February interview with Becker’s ASC Review, Dr. Caruso outlined his vision for the future of spine care. “It took a great deal of effort for us to realize our vision of “one-stop shopping for spine care,” he said. “We wanted to make spine care as easy and convenient as calling an 800 number. We knew patients would love the convenience, but we had to invest a lot of time in studying the regulations and payor contracts to address the requirements for structuring all the businesses.”
As far as his advice for young spine surgeons, Dr. Caruso had a few simple words: “Work with people you trust.”
Dr. Caruso is a member of the Maryland State Surgical Association, an organization that evolved out of the “Save Our Doctors” efforts. He is a national spokesman for Doctors for Medical Liability Reform and a board member of Blue Chip Surgical Partners.
