In a Texas Back Institute blog post, Jessica Shellock, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at the institute, discusses if high heels can permanently injure a woman’s back.

Dr. Shellock says that while high heals do not injure a woman’s back, they may lead to episodes of increased pain for women who are predisposed to back injuries. Women who suffer from facet-mediated pain or spinal stenosis may have back pain after wearing high heels because the action results in an extension of the back. This extension exacerbates symptoms of back pain.

Dr. Shellock also says that women who have had back surgery should try to limit or avoid wearing high heels for a short time after surgery.

According to Dr. Shellock, high heels are safe to wear; however, if women know that they are going to be on their feet for a long time, they might want to limit the use.
