Most people who are working out look to their personal trainer for guidance, however, sometimes personal trainers may not always be able to offer the appropriate advice for avoiding physical injuries.

In the post, spine surgeon Michael Hisey, MD, of Plano-based Texas Back Institute, discusses five ways to avoid injuries while working out:

1. Warm up, and slowly increase the activity.
2. Be aware of gender differences.
3. Know your body’s limitations.
4. Be careful to avoid too much repetition.
5. Don’t make sudden moves.
