According to a Commonwealth Fund Study, only 49 percent of solo practitioners are using EHR. Around 90 percent of physicians in larger practices had the technology. The AMA advocated in Washington, D.C., on behalf of solo physicians and in response CMS will now allow physicians to accept donated EHR systems without violating federal anti-kickback regulations through 2021, according to the report.
However, physicians must cover 15 percent of the donation cost before receiving it and purchase any necessary hardware as well as staff training.
