Treatment for patients with end-stage ankle arthritis previously had been ankle fusion, but recent developments in implant design and surgical technique have given patients an additional viable option, according to the release.

The ACFAS advised a qualified foot and ankle surgeon with specific training in total ankle replacement should make the determination whether a patient is right for this treatment.
