The researchers mined data from the 2006 National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery and combined the data with population size estimates from the 2006 U.S. Census Bureau to calculate rates per 10,000 persons.
The estimates for each procedure include:
• 272,148 rotator cuff repairs
• 257,541 shoulder arthroscopies, excluding rotator cuffs
• 576,924 carpal tunnel releases
• 25,250 wrist arthroscopies excluding carpal tunnel releases
Carpal Tunnel releases reported the highest utilization, and people between the ages of 65 and 74 had the highest utilization for rotator cuff repairs. Impingement syndrome, periarthritis, bursitis and instability/SLAP tears were among the most common reasons for performing non-cuff shoulder repair.
