Upon his death, John Mayes left the money to Dr. Henderson, stipulating that it support orthopedic research. Dr. Henderson has a special interest in non-embryonic stem cell research and regrowing tissue.

Dr. Henderson is working with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Fund to identify corporations that could supplement Mr. Mayes’ gift to raise enough funds to support a grant. Once a grant is available, OREF will convene a stakeholder meeting to identify “questions about mesenchymal progenitor cells that most need to be answered.”
