Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Andrew Sama of Hospital for Special Surgery

Andrew A. Sama, MD, is an associate attending orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery and an associate professor of clinical surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He is also the fellowship director of the spinal surgical service at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, Eastern Orthopaedic Society, the HSS Spine Fellowship Alumni Association and AO Spine North America. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Sama’s clinical interests include complex spine surgery, minimally invasive lateral lumbar fusions, non-fusion and motion preservation technologies and microsurgery. He has received numerous research grants as well as funding from the National Institutes of Health. He serves on the editorial board of Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine and also serves as a reviewer for Spine and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.

 

“You have a common goal of improving the patient’s quality of life, and you can take a multidisciplinary approach to researching those pathways,” said Dr. Sama in a Becker’s Spine Review article. “That’s why we’ve been able to make some strides. This goes across all fields, whether private practice or academic practice.”

 

Dr. Sama earned his medical degree at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Medical Center. He has also completed a fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical College in spinal disorders and deformities.
