The study examined data on 90,932 patients enrolled in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, who had a readmission rate of 12.8 percent. Complications were 53 percent among the readmitted patients, compared to 16 percent among patients who were not readmitted.
Authors of the report estimated preventing all studied complications would save Medicare about $620 million per year. Even preventing 5 percent of the complications would result in $31 million savings per year.
