6 Statistics on the Experience of Being Sued for Malpractice

Forty-one percent of physicians found being sued for malpractice an upsetting experience but not one that prevented them from functioning, according to Medscape’s Malpractice Report, released in 2013.

Researchers polled 3,480 U.S. physicians from across 25 specialty areas for the survey.

When asked what the experience of getting sued for malpractice was like, respondents reported the following:

•    Horrible, one of the worst experiences of my life — 23 percent
•    Very bad, disruptive and humiliating — 16 percent
•    Upsetting, but I was able to function — 41 percent
•    Unpleasant, but I’ve had equally unpleasant experiences — 13 percent
•    Neutral — 3 percent
•    Not as bad as I expected — 3 percent
