Alexandre DaSilva, the senior researcher in the study from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, told Everyday Health that this electrical stimulation activates the same parts of the brain on which pharmaceutical opiates work to provide pain relief.
With more research and testing, this treatment could one day reduce the need for medication. The results of the study were published in Frontiers in Psychiatry.
