AAOS Releases New Guideline for Total Joint Surgery Patients Undergoing Dental Procedures

A new evidence-based guideline from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Dental Association has found insufficient evidence to recommend routine antibiotic administration for patients with orthopedic implants to prevent infections prior to dental procedures.

The organizations say there is no direct evidence linking routine dental procedures to prosthetic joint infections. The organizations collaborated on this project, which makes three recommendations based on a systematic review of the evidence:
