Orthopedic surgeon salaries up 24% since 2021

The average annual salary for orthopedic surgeons has increased over each of the past three years, rising a total of more than $72,000, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

Orthopedic surgeons earned the most in Georgia in 2021, Hawaii in 2022 and Minnesota in 2023.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated compensation data April 3 to reflect May 2023 information, the latest available. 

Here is the average annual salary and mean hourly wage for orthopedic surgeons, along with the average earnings in the highest-paying state in each year since 2021:

2021

Mean annual wage: $306,220

Mean hourly wage: $147.22

Highest-paying state: Georgia, annual wage of $381,830

2022

Mean annual wage: $371,400; year-over-year increase of $65,180

Mean hourly wage: $178.56

Highest-paying state: Hawaii, annual wage of $554,520

2023

Mean annual wage: $378,250; year-over-year increase of $6,850

Mean hourly wage: $181.85

Highest-paying state: Minnesota, annual wage of $565,450
