Plano-based Texas Back Institute has adopted the iFuse Implant System by SI-BONE for sacroiliac joint pathology, according to a MD News report.
Ralph Rashbaum, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at the practice, investigated the system thoroughly before adopting it. He served on the surgeon advisory board of SI-BONE, studying complications and postoperative management of iFuse patients and helping refine the technique.
The iFuse procedure aims at providing stability and fusion of the SI joint and involves placing triangular implants across the joint into the sacrum.
"Based on a similar technology first used to fuse the ankle joint, the iFuse Implant System is part of an evolution toward minimally traumatic orthopedic procedures," said Dr. Rashbaum to MD News. "Instead of making long incisions and stripping the muscles, we now split and dilate, leading to smaller incisions and less trauma."
