Hospital for Special Surgery appoints Dr. John DiFiori chief of primary care sports medicine — 7 insights

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery appointed John DiFiori, MD, as chief of primary care sports medicine, effective February 1.

Here is what you need to know:

 

1. Dr. DiFiori succeeds Brian Halpern, MD, who served as chief since 2011 and was the first non-surgical fellowship-trained and board certified sports medicine physician at HSS. Dr. Halpern will continue to be a part of HSS sports services.

 

2. Before joining HSS, Dr. DiFiori was the chief of sports medicine and non-operative orthopedics at UC Los Angeles. He was also the head team physician for athletics at UCLA, where he oversaw the care of over 650 athletes in 24 NCAA sports.

 

3. Dr. DiFiori is also the NBA’s director of sports medicine.

 

4. Dr. DiFiori received his medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia. He underwent fellowship training in sports medicine at UCLA.

 

5. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine's former president. He served as a medical consultant for the NHL Players Association and a U.S. team physician for the United States Olympic Committee.

 

6. Dr. DiFiori serves on the editorial boards of Current Sports Medicine Reports and the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine.

 

7. He treats patients of all ages for sports-related injuries.
