Ben Shaffer, MD, team physician for the Washington Capitals professional hockey team, recently preformed shoulder surgery to repair Eric Fehr's torn labrum, according to a report from The Washington Post.
Mr. Fehr sustained the injury when he collided with a teammate during a game. His right shoulder joint was dislocated and he ripped the labrum cartilage from the bone. He returned after 22 games, but still experienced instability and eventually decided to undergo surgery.
Dr. Shaffer was able to successfully reattach the labrum and reported that the ball and socket looked healthy. Mr. Fehr's recovery is expected to take four to six months and he may not be ready to start at the beginning of next season. He'll undergo a specific rehabilitation program during the off season to build strength and motion in the injured joint.
