Sports related injuries occurring at earlier ages in patients: 4 highlights

In a recent report from the New York Post, children and teens are needed sports related surgery to treat injuries at even younger ages.

Here are four highlights:

 

1. A 2015 survey in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found 60 percent of all Tommy John surgeries are for patients ages 15 to 19.

 

2. The largest cause of young athletes needing surgery for overuse injuries is due to athletes specializing in one sport at an early age.

 

3. Athletes as young as 13 now need surgery for overuse injuries.

 

4. To combat this rising epidemic, Illinois instituted a pitch-count limit of 105 for high school baseball games. New York and New Jersey also have limits at 105 and 110 pitches.
