New technique to improve Jones fracture fixation stability: 5 key notes

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine surgeons are using a plantar plating technique to offer better stability according to the May/June 2017 issue of Orthopedics.

Here are five takeaways from the issue:

  1. The plantar plating technique is used to treat proximal fifth metatarsal fractures also known as Jones fractures.
  1. Jones fractures are common in elite athletes.
  1. Although intramedullary screw fixation is the most common surgical treatment, nonunion and refracture remain a concern with this technique.
  1. Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Chair Kevin Varner, MD, said in the issue, "Plate fixation offers the ability to gain purchase in the proximal fracture fragment which offers improved rotational control."
  1. Dr. Varner also recommends this new technique for patients who have pre-existing stress response at the fracture site.
