Women's Choice Award names best orthopedic hospitals for women's joint replacements

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Based on recent research indicating the importance of gender-specific care for total joint replacement patients, the Women's Choice Award has pinpointed "America's Best Hospitals for Orthopedics for 2017."

"America's Best Hospitals for Orthopedics gives women a trusted referral resource to help them choose a hospital proven for clinical excellence that also recognizes their specific healthcare needs," said Delia Passi, Women's Choice Award founder and CEO.

Here are five insights:

1. Researchers investigated whether gender-specific care is relevant for total joint replacements, in a study published The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. The study revealed women saw an increased hypersensitivity rate to joint implant metals, compared to men.

2. Further, a study published in The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons demonstrated gender differences in musculoskeletal disease, including structural anatomy differences, hormones and genetics.

3. The National Osteoporosis Foundation reported one in two women, and one in four men, will break a bone because of osteoporosis.

4. Women's Choice Award leveraged Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey results as well as research on women's healthcare preferences to select hospitals.

5. The hospitals also met certain qualifications in reduced surgical complications and infections.
