Adam W. Anz, MD, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.-based Andrews Institute for Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine will lead a study evaluating stem cells' impact on regenerating knee cartilage with Dr. Khay Yong Saw of Malaysia-based Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Center.
Here's what you need to know:
1. The surgeons will conduct the study at KLSMC and Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
2. Both sites' research will be parallel and the Regenerative Medicine Center will attempt to replicate treatments KLSMC already offers.
3. The researchers hope to prove to the FDA that stem cell procedures are safe and effective.
4. The Malaysian government helped fund the project.
5. The study may take up to six years.
Dr. Saw said, "The stem cell work we are doing is not just designed for the knee…It has the potential of helping all types of tissues; that is the beauty of stem cells."
