Knee injuries 4th most common cause of missed time in MLB: 6 study insights

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

A study in the American Journal of Orthopedics investigated the frequency and impact of knee injuries among professional baseball players.

The researchers identified 2,171 Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball players with knee injuries, which included any injuries during the preseason, regular season or postseason that resulted in time away from play.

Here's what they found:

1. The knee injury rate was 1.2 per 1,000 exposures in professional baseball; base runners represented the most frequently injured position (24 percent).

2. Around 12 percent of knee injuries required surgery.

3. The mean number of days missed per knee injury was 16.2 days.

4. Knee injuries encompassed 6.5 percent of all injuries in professional baseball; knee injuries were the fifth most common cause of missed time in professional baseball and the fourth most common cause of missed time in the MLB.

5. The most common cause of knee injury was noncontact (44 percent).

6. The most common locations for knee injuries included infield (30 percent) and home plate (23 percent).

The researchers suggest that "these data can be utilized for targeted injury prevention initiatives."
