SC High School League approves pitch count limit: 5 things to know

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The South Carolina High School League approved a proposal which would place high school pitchers under a pitch count for the 2016-17 season, the Aiken Standard reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The SCHSL and the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association jointly approved the proposal Sept. 15.

It'll be in effect for the coming year for ballplayers at the high school and middle school levels.

2. Varsity pitchers will be allowed to throw 110 pitches a game. Additionally the mandate requires rest days between starts on a sliding scale. After 30 pitches, a pitcher takes one day off; 46 to 60 pitches is two days off; 61 to 75 pitches is three days off; 76 to 90 is four days and 90-plus is a full five days off.

3. Junior Varsity and middle schoolers cannot exceed 75 pitches.

4. After taking a pitcher out of the game, they are not eligible for any other position the same day.

5. If a coach violates any of the rules, the game will be forfeited and the school will be fined.
