Orthopedic Sports Medicine

New York-based University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry researchers analyzed the impact of concussions on students' academic abilities, according to health24.

The study analyzed emergency department visits by high school students and college students between 2013 and 2015. Students either suffered concussions, arm injuries or leg injuries. Researchers gathered self-reported academic complications one week post-injury.

American Journal of Public Health published the study's results.

Here are five observations:

1. The study found concussed high school students and college students struggled performing academically one week after injury, compared to those with arm injuries or leg injuries.

2. Researchers found females were more prone to negative concussion effects.

3. Students with two or more previous concussions were also more vulnerable to negative effects.

4. One month after the concussions, concussed students did not demonstrate worse academic performance compared to those with other injuries.

5. Researchers recommend the establishment of return-to-learn guidelines.
