Dr. George Theodore: Pro-surgeon for pro-athletes

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

George H. Theodore, MD, is a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital as well as an instructor in orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School, both in Boston.

Dr. Theodore's interests include knee, ankle and foot surgery, with a focus on sports-related injuries. He is a nationally recognized-expert in the management of injuries in professional athletes and dancers. He has treated some of the top athletes in the United States, including Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Dustin Pedroia and Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox.

One of Dr. Theodore's most famous procedures was Curt Schilling's "bloody sock" that occurred the night before Game 2 of the 2004 World Series. Dr. Theodore held the tendon in place while orthopedic hand surgeon and Boston Red Sox team physician at the time, William J. Morgan, inserted the sutures. Dr. Theodore's and Dr. Morgan's repairs were critical in helping the Red Sox win the 2004 World Series for the first time in 86 years.

He also performed arthroscopic ankle surgery on New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski, who injured his ankle during the 2012 AFC Championship game, but waited until after the Super Bowl to undergo surgery. Mr. Gronkowski returned to the field the following season and was a leader in the Patriots' 2015-2016 season, culminating with a Super Bowl win.

Dr. Theodore has appeared on the Today Show and other various cable and local television programs. He has been featured in numerous magazines, including USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and Women's World, as well as appearing on NPR. Boston Magazine named Dr. Theodore a top orthopedic foot and ankle specialist in 2005 and a top orthopedic surgeon in 2012.

Dr. Theodore currently serves as team physician for the Boston Red Sox and as a consultant to the New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and New England Revolution. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also completed a fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
