Jeffrey Traina, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Natchez (Miss.) Community Hospital, recently gave a presentation on platelet-rich plasma at the annual International Arthroplasty Conference in Sharm Elsheikh, Egypt, and at the International Society for Technical Arthroplasty congress in Dubai, according to a report from The Natchez Democrat.
The presentation was based on a study Dr. Traina completed where he treated 81 patients with PRP after total knee replacement surgery. He found that only 2.4 percent of the patients needed a blood transfusion, compared with the typical transfusion rates which are 30-50 percent.
