Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Julia Mancuso, four-time Olympic medalist, is recovering from a recent hip surgery, according to Newsday.

Here are four things to know:

1. While Ms. Mancuso will not be able to race this season, she will be pain-free by next year and will be almost completely recovered in time for the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea.

2. The 31-year-old will only consider retirement once she is fully healed.

3. Before deciding to have the surgery, Mancuso tried other methods first to prepare for the season, from injections to having a paralabral cyst removed.

4. The procedure involved fixing some cartilage damage, cleaning up some bone spurs, and putting more anchors in her labrum due to a slight tear.
