Female athletes face increased risk for ACL tears — 7 key points

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Female athletes are at a higher risk for ACL tears, according to Baylor College of Medicine News.

Here are seven points:

1. The two highest risk patient groups for ACL tears among NCAA athletes are female soccer and basketball players.

2. Female athletes are considered high risk because of anatomical and neuromuscular factors.

3. Studies revealed female athletes are two to 10 times more likely to have ACL tears compared to their male counterparts.

4. Female athletes participating in soccer and basketball have greater trunk motion, resulting in high rotational forces at the knee.

5. Additionally, female athletes tend to be more quadriceps dominant when they land from jumps, resulting in knees being placed in more extended positions.

6. Female athletes can prevent ACL injuries through neuromuscular training and core strengthening.

7. Movement screen performed mostly by athletic trainers can aid in identifying problems and determining specific corrective exercises to strengthen the core and enhance neuromuscular coordination.
