Sports injuries leading to prescription drug addiction — 4 notes

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Experts are finding a relationship between sports injury and prescription drug addiction, according to Vavel.

Here are four notes:

1. Physicians are prescribing athletes with injuries OxyCotin, Vicotin and Percocet. The opiates are very addictive to young brains and can lead to heroin, morphine and other drug use.

2. Some experts advise athletes to not take opiates for more than a maximum of 72 hours. If their pain exceeds that time frame, the athletes should see a pain management physician who can perform various procedures.

3. Families Against Narcotics is teaming up with schools to start a mandatory program for athletes and their parents to educate them about the addictive nature of opiates.

4. Parents are advised to tell physicians they prefer their child to be on a non-narcotic pain medication.
