Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Duke University women's basketball player Lynee Belton tore her ACL last December, and after she had surgery, the student has been shadowing Alison P. Toth, MD, sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at Duke Medicine, according to a Duke Chronicle report.

Here are four things to know:

1. Dr. Toth is a team physician for Duke's women's athletics, and she also was the physician who performed a shoulder and ACL surgery on Ms. Belton.

2. A number of Duke students have pursued careers in medicine, some a part of the College Athletic Pre-Medical Experience program, and shadowed surgeons at the school, according to the report.

3. Dr. Toth received her medical degree from Duke in 1994, and completed an orthopedic surgery/sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship with the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

4. Dr. Toth has served as an assistant physician for the New York Giants.
