Powerhouse hitter for the Miami Marlins, Giancarlo Stanton, underwent successful surgery for a left wrist hamate fracture, reports Fox Sports.
Here are five things to know, according to the report:
1. Patrick W. Owens, MD, performed the surgery at the University of Miami Hospital with Marlins' medical director Lee Kaplan, MD.
2. Mr. Stanton first felt the injury when he was batting on Friday.
3. Following discomfort, Mr. Stanton iced his swollen hand and had an x-ray that confirmed the fracture.
4. Mr. Stanton was placed on the disabled list, and will miss next month's All-Star Game. He was leading the majors in home runs, with 27, and had 67 RBIs thus far in the season.
5. Dr. Owens is a hand and upper extremity surgeon at University of Miami Health System, as well as an associate professor of clinical orthopedics and chief of the division of orthopedic hand surgery at the university.
